I posted earlier in the week about the Galway Fashion Fiesta which took place on Thursday this week in the Meyrick hotel. I was delighted to be invited and it was a really great show!
The show was created to showcase the work of the students of GTI in various fashion courses. It also aimed to raise money for Ability West, an organisation which provides support to young adults with intellectual disabilities in Galway. The event was hosted by RTE's Brendan Courtney who did a great job of keeping the crowd entertained! I rocked up after work in my maxi skirt and my new body necklace thing which I have yet to think of a proper name for. I am loving how easy it is to make a great outfit out of nothing by using that thing though!!!!
We were also treated to a performance by the Youth Ballet West which had all sorts of mice, teapots and a very realistic Alice! The costumes were really cute as well! The ballet will be held during the Galway Volvo Ocean Race in June/July and the performance is titled 'Alice Underground' - a modern intepretation of the classic novel.
So back to the clothes! The night was a fantastic look into the wonderful work of the students - as I mentioned - and it was great to see the display. Galway has a habit of producing great designers - Philp Treacy comes from here! Which I didn't know until Brendan Courtney mentioned it!!!!! I've long been complaining that there is a real lack of support for Irish design and in particular for young Irish designers who need a little bit of extra support in bridging the gap between college and the work of design. We, as a country, are forever loosing our best designers to the UK and its about time that we show the world what we are capable of! I think there should be more student shows, a better fashion week where we all together as a community instead of individual cities and also, better design MAs to encourage students to stay.
The college also offer hair and make-up courses so it wasn't just about the clothes on display but also the wonderful hair and make-up designs. I spotted a rather wild mowhawk which made me miss the days where I had one....sigh....god growing up sucks! I was also inspired by the serious display of color and creativity. I do have to apologise though - I am using a new camera and its seriously awful. I mean a lot of the photos I took came out terrible - these are the best pictures and even they are not the best! It just blurred, changed the lighting, took ages to load and was too slow. I am sending a horrible email to the company as we speak about their terrible terrible cameras! Still I hope you can get a sense of the level of work that went into producing such a large diverse show of creative types.
If you missed the show then don't worry as it is a yearly event and will return - however you will have to wait an entire year though!
Once again though - congratulations to the students on a fantastic show!
